The Link between Humor & Health… Plus, Test Your Funny Bone with the Last Laugh Survey By Rhonda Beaman, EdD Humor is a special kind of joy. Humor often results from a peculiar and unexpected insight, a cleverness that takes us by surprise. Humor creates laughter, which is immediate, explosive, and brief. Laughter is often a sudden release of tension between the mind and the emotions, which may be artificially set up by telling a joke. Laughter is a way to cleanse our systems of built-up tension and incongruity. According to psychologist Dr. Lisa Rosenberg, “The act of producing humor, of making a joke, gives us a mental break and increases our objectivity in the face of overwhelming stress.” “I don’t feel old. In fact, I don’t feel anything until noon. Then it’s time for my nap.” -- Bob Hope, comic, on turning 100 Activities from February Spring is just around the corner and while we have had some wonderful days, we look forward to the warmth that spring brings. Coming soon will be walks in the gardens, crocus and primrose peeking out from the melted snow and birds returning north; all to let us know that spring is on the way. We have managed to keep warm with a little toe-tapping and hand clapping as we enjoyed the musical talents of Abigail Unger with her Life Rhythms, Joseph Borzellere with his outlandish comedy, Richard Dagenais and Susanna playing some Jazz and Kieran Kreiss playing old favorites. We have started our Lenten devotions with Sr. Donna Font and The Reverend Carl Reichert. We are also grateful to Carol Dammann for providing music during these times. Our Canisius service-learning students, along with the Circle K group from Canisius, frosted Valentine cookies, played Valentine bingo and had an all around good time with the residents. They will return at Easter time. Activities for March Once again our friends from St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute have graciously invited us to enjoy a musical evening at Buffalo State College. This year’s production will be Meridith Wilson’s “The Music Man.' The story follows fast talking traveling salesman Harold Hill as he cons the people of River City, Iowa into buying instruments and uniforms—this despite the fact that he doesn’t know a trombone from a treble clef. The Music Man is funny, wicked, warm and touching and is musical entertain-ment at it’s best. Please sign up early as our bus will only accommodate 12 residents and this is a show you will not want to miss. The performance is Thursday, March 6th. We will leave at 6:10 and return around 10:00 pm. On the 8th of March at 10:00 am, we will be pleased to welcome the Rince Na Tiarna Dancers. This group of young Irish dancers have performed for us before and are always enjoyable to watch. Their curly heads and brightly decorated costumes, along with their high stepping dance steps make for a wonderful morning. Our Maundy Thursday and Good Friday services will be lead by The Reverend Carl Reichert. Sister Donna Font will conduct the Lutheran Service on Easter Sunday. Please plan to attend spiritual activities during lent. Volunteers from Houghton College will be here March 15th. This is their annual trek to the city for a service-learning project. We look forward to their visit and to having a great time with them. Our sincere thanks to Cheryl Rogers for spending Saturday evenings as our Eucharistic Minister. Cheryl starts a singing program right after supper and then proceeds with her service followed by the rosary. Once again we want to thank our friends from Nixon, Peabody, LLP for their generous donations. They have supplied our home with magazine subscriptions for our residents. The residents now receive current issues of Time, Newsweek, National Geographic, and Sports Illustrated, thanks to them. Happy Spring !! |
